Postpartum Depression Therapy- Counseling Boulder, CO
|Postpartum depression often has so many layers, it’s hard to know where to start getting help.
There is the emotional layers. Your life has been rocked by adding a big stress (and bundle of joy, though it’s hard to connect with the joy for many.) Your relationship to yourself, your friends, your fulfillment, your partner, your identity has shifted in subtle and obvious ways. It’s the subtle ways that are hard to name and can feel overwhelming.
There are the physical layers. If you gave birth or adopted, you are getting much less sleep and have much less time and energy to nourish yourself. Any “holes” in your health you had before adding a baby will show up now. Just the lack of sleep alone can make anyone feel grumpy and depressed. Then, add on any number of other physical challenges and it’s an uphill battle for sure.
Getting even one or two good nights sleep almost always eases a layer of the depression. Ask for help, hire a night nanny, have your husband take a shift and your world may likely feel bright and new again after that good sleep. I help with sleep issues in babies over 3 months. I started my son on a daytime routine for feeding and putting him down awake at naps at 4 weeks and at 10 weeks he stopped needing a night feeding and at 11 weeks started consistently sleeping through the night. His sleeping might have saved my life! There are basic steps to take to help your baby learn to sleep all night.
There are so many layers and having a helpful, compassionate, skillful ear to listen and help guide you towards feeling energetic and joyful again, is invaluable. Just a few sessions can make a world of difference.
